What Is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured psychotherapy approach that can help people process distressing or traumatic experiences.

Sometimes difficult experiences continue to feel emotionally “stuck.” You may understand that something happened in the past, but still experience strong emotions, anxiety, intrusive memories, avoidance, or physical reactions when something reminds you of it.

EMDR is designed to help you process these experiences in a way that can reduce their emotional intensity and help you feel safer and more in control.

EMDR may be helpful for people experiencing:

  • Trauma and distressing past experiences
  • Anxiety and persistent worry
  • Intrusive or upsetting memories
  • Emotional reactions to past events
  • Difficult life experiences or transitions
  • Relationship or interpersonal trauma
  • Feelings of being overwhelmed or “stuck” by past experiences

Meet Mark Ramsay

Mark is a Registered Counselling Therapist who works with individuals, couples, and teens, and brings a warm, practical and compassionate approach to counselling.

He has experience supporting clients through trauma, anxiety, relationship challenges, grief, and other difficult life experiences. Mark uses evidence-based approaches tailored to each client’s needs and incorporates EMDR therapy when it is an appropriate fit.

His goal is to create a space where clients feel comfortable being themselves, understood, and supported as they work toward meaningful change.

EMDR Therapy Online or In Person

Mark offers EMDR therapy both virtually and in person, providing flexibility for clients throughout Nova Scotia.

Virtual counselling allows you to participate from the comfort and privacy of your own home, while in-person appointments are available for clients who prefer to meet face-to-face.

During an initial appointment, Mark will take the time to understand what brings you to counselling, learn about your history and goals, and determine whether EMDR—or another therapeutic approach—would be the best fit for you.

You Don’t Have to Keep Carrying the Past

You may have tried to move forward, but certain experiences can continue to affect your emotions, relationships, confidence, or sense of safety.

Seeking counselling doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. Sometimes, it means you’ve reached a point where you want support in understanding what you’ve been through and changing how it continues to affect you.

Mark is currently accepting new clients for EMDR therapy, both online and in person.

If you’re wondering whether EMDR might be right for you, you can start with a free 15-minute consultation to ask questions and see whether Mark may be a good fit.

EMDR does involve discussing and working with difficult experiences, but you don’t necessarily need to describe every detail of what happened. Mark will work collaboratively with you and at a pace that feels manageable.
An initial assessment can help determine whether EMDR is an appropriate approach for your concerns. Mark can also recommend other therapeutic approaches if they would better meet your needs.
