Sometimes the holidays can bring on extra stress and extra feelings of sadness. Maybe you’re missing a loved one who’s no longer with you. Maybe you don’t feel the overwhelming joy you think everyone else does, or that you’re “supposed” to feel. Follow these tips to help beat the holiday blues:
- Acknowledge Your Feelings
- Don’t suppress your emotions. It’s ok to not feel jolly all the time!
- Talk to a trusted friend, family member, or therapist. If you don’t have a therapist, call our office today to get booked in with one!
- Set Realistic Expectations
- Let go of the expectation for the “perfect holiday.” Try to enjoy the small moments!
- Simplify: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, make a checklist or to-do list and mark things off. Prioritize!
- Create Your Own Traditions
- It’s ok to do things your own way! If old traditions are causing stress, or distress, it’s ok to not do things “the way you’ve always done them” and try new things.
- Stay Active and Get Outside
- Exercise and fresh air are proven to lift your spirits by increasing dopamine levels (the “feel good neurotransmitter) and can be a quick fix to boost your mood and reduce stress. Bundle up, go for a walk, and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air!
- Focus on Gratitude
- Try shifting your perspective to reflect on what you’re grateful for instead of dwelling on what’s going wrong or what (or who) is missing.
- Practice mindfulness: being mindful of what’s going on around you in the moment can reduce mild anxiety.
- Maintain Social Connections
- Reach out to a friend or group of friends for encouragement or to spend time with them.
- Take Care of Your Body
- Ensure you’re getting the proper amount of sleep and eating right. Balance comfort food with healthy food to keep your mood and energy stable.
- Give Yourself Permission to Rest
- Sometimes you need to rest and recharge and say no to requests or plans that feel like too much. Protect your well-being and energy. It’s ok to slow down and say no!
- Book an Appointment with a Therapist
- If the “holiday blues” feel overwhelming, we’re here to help! You don’t have to go through this alone. Reach out today to book a free consult call with a qualified member of our team, or book an intake session online.
